About Rob

Rob Owen With over 21 years as a school principal, author, and classroom educator, I have deeply observed and personally felt the significant stress and burnout that plague the education world. The relentless demands of lesson plans, assessments, meetings, adapting to new technologies, and many others can be overwhelming and often push dedicated and passionate professionals out of education. However, a more profound yet overlooked issue is the critical need for self-care among educators and their students.

For more than 25 years, mindfulness and Tai Chi have been vital to both my personal and professional life. In 2006, I introduced these practices into my classroom. Today, I continue to teach both neurotypical and neurodiverse students, including those with ADHD, emotional dysregulation, anxiety, and depression, as well as educators facing similar stress. This evidence-based method enhances balance, relaxation, self-awareness, and focus.

My venture into mindful movement was not only professional but also deeply personal, stemming from a near-death car accident at 17. This traumatic experience forced me to restart my life from scratch, during which I discovered the restorative power of mindful movement. Engaging in Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and Qigong helped me cope with my physical and mental trauma and eventually adapt back into work and everyday life. As I got back into the classroom, I had less time to keep practicing as much as I did during my recovery time, so I began integrating these practices into the classroom and with my students. I found first hand not only the therapeutic benefits my students found through practice, but they were also pedagogically effective as well. These practices particularly helped neurodivergent students regulate emotions and maintain focus.

Teaching Tai Chi and Qigong each morning profoundly impacted my students and reshaped my educational approach, especially within the context of classroom management. These routines and specific preventive classroom management methods not only readied students for learning, but also demonstrated the importance of mindfulness-based movement in creating a calm, engaged learning environment. Witnessing this transformation encouraged other teachers to adopt similar strategies, enhancing classroom dynamics.

M2F is more than a program—it’s a philosophy, transforming adversity into opportunity and empowering both educators and students to turn challenges into teachable moments.

This journey of recovery and discovery has taught me that by deriving meaning from adversity, and living a conscious life we can achieve our fullest potential. Through Move 2 Focus, I am committed to advancing these transformative practices to support teachers in various aspects of their careers and lives. This support, in turn, equips teachers with lifelong tools to benefit their students, our future generation.
